A concerned citizen contacted The McGuffey Voice with concerns about the safety of the Village of McGuffey's drinking water. According to the citizen, the village received a notice of action required regarding a drinking water violation.

The notice, which is a public record, is available on the EPA's e-doc website, where most public agency records can be accessed. It states that the village had significant deficiencies in maintaining the minimum required free chlorine residual in its distribution system. Additionally, the notice indicates the village failed to maintain a minimum chlorine residual for three or more days during May, June, and August 2024.

The letter required the village to correct the issues immediately and submit a report within 30 days identifying the problem and outlining corrective actions to resolve the violation. This is not the only violation the village received in 2024.

However, when The McGuffey Voice requested a copy of the report and additional information about this and other violations, village administrator Chuck Bell declined to provide details. Neither Bell nor other village representatives would answer questions about the violations, stating only that they are being addressed.

The EPA, citing public record laws, provided The McGuffey Voice with a copy of an email sent by the village that outlined the problem and a plan to correct it. While the email identified the issue and proposed a resolution, it remains unclear whether the proposed actions will effectively resolve the problem or if the village is adhering to the plan, as officials have refused to discuss the matter with anyone outside the EPA.
